Porcupine Revisits

Back in April of 2007, I showed you some pictures of a porcupine and the damage they caused to trees in the valley. Well now they are making it personal.

This pine tree across the road from the house has been debarked to the point of girdling and the resulting inevitable death.

My expert wildlife tracking skills were employed in following this rather obvious trail leading to and from the dying tree to the porcupines den tree a short distance away.

I

This fellow displayed his business end to me last summer not too far away. I guess I am going to have to go visit him someday.

Go Fly a Kite

As I packed for our trip to Florida to visit my Mom, I worried about taking enough things with me to keep me busy. A couple of books, office work projects, photo backups so I could work on some blog stories, the usual. We didn’t have a lot of adventures planned for this trip. I had ordered some screen spline on the internet and had it delivered to her house. The folks who installed the screens on her porch had used the wrong size and it kept coming loose, so I wanted to work on that.

The two day trip down was uneventful. Arriving Sunday evening, Mom looked great as she greeted us at the door and promptly directed me to the baked goods. Monday, I finished my second book of the trip and worked on the porch, ate more of Mom's baked goods and strawberry shortcake, and played chickenfoot. Tuesday the big event was an Orlando Magic vs. Charlotte Bobcats NBA game. We left early, went out to dinner, parked in the VIP lot, and enjoyed an overtime victory by the Magic.

Wednesday I finished off a couple of hours of office work, picked oranges with Uncle Charlie, and then we headed to Crescent Beach on the ocean. The water was too cold to swim, but we had a ball. I was even able to tell my mother to go fly a kite after all these years!

Jeff loves having his picture taken, as you can see. He went for a dip in the waves but he was soon back to warm up.

We hurried home, picking up a pizza on the way. Mom and I went to choir practice, then we played chickenfoot.

Thursday we went to DeLeon State Park and ate lunch at the Sugar Mill restaurant where you make your own pancakes. While there we saw friends from Adams, NY!

A manitee was coming into the spring looking for warmer waters as it was starting to get cold.

And we saw a wild alligator, always a thrill.

A trip that afternoon to Daytona Beach, just so we could say we had been there was fun. We walked around the speedway a little but no tours. Then on to the beach for great wave action, sailers, and surfers.

A visit to the Ponce Inlet lighthouse at dusk then dinner out.

Before I knew it, it was Friday morning and time to head North. I had finished a great book about Clifford Sawyer, forgotten to check my email for several days, didn't read a newspaper the whole week, I guess you could say I actually wound down a bit.
